• Overview

The Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (VAMR) laboratory is an all-purpose laboratory set up within the Ateneo de Manila University Loyola Schools Campus which aims to provide students and visitors from various disciplines (both STEM and non-STEM) a viable way to consume VAMR educational content. The laboratory can be reserved on a per-session basis and VAMR devices can be used for beta-testing and usability experimentation, particularly to test new software developed and create VAMR content using the Ateneo Virtual Reality Escape (AVRE) Framework. This provides an avenue for both individuals and groups to explore VAMR technology while minimizing costs and maximizing device utilization.
The laboratory has a dedicated software development group in charge of producing educational VAMR applications that cater to the Philippine context. They also provide guidance to those who intend to use the VAMR technology to ensure safe and functional use. Students and visitors, with prior knowledge or not, may learn more about VAMR with the help of these professionals.
• The AVRE Framework

The Ateneo Virtual Reality Escape (AVRE) Framework is a software framework for building multipurpose VAMR software. This allows software developers, both from ADMU and beyond, to continue the development of VAMR-based educational material designed for Filipinos – covering more subject matter over time and updating existing content as it gets outdated.
Aside from this, the AVRE framework also helps formalize production workflows and best practices so that future developers can expedite further software creation and simplify maintenance. It is hoped that this framework can ignite and foster inter-organizational collaboration for developing educational VAMR software in the Philippines.

• VR Games by the VAMR Laboratory
– Heritage Hero: The Villa Escudero VR Game

The first proof-of-concept game developed, in collaboration with the Villa Escudero Museum, is the Heritage Hero: The Villa Escudero Museum Virtual Reality (VR) Game. It’s an interactive “escape room”-style adventure game set in the Villa Escudero Museum, a museum found in Tiaong, Quezon, Philippines. Players can immerse themselves in the environment of the Villa Escudero Museum and have a close look into the Escudero family’s museum collection. Aside from learning about history, culture, and art, players will also hone their practical, logical, and creative thinking skills as they unlock and solve challenges found in the game.
– Heritage Hero: The Secrets of the “Golden Era”

The second and upcoming game developed using the AVRE framework, in collaboration with the Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library (AMLML), is Heritage Hero: The Secrets of the “Golden Era”. This game explores a crucial period in Philippine history and delves into the key themes of Press Freedom, Public Health, and Economic Development. Given its historical nature, this game is set in a hypothetical location – an abandoned mansion. The player can learn about important facts about the period while completing escape room type puzzles with the guidance of a hand crank radio.
