ALLS Demonstrates Learning Apps to the DepEd Division of Makati

On December 16, 2020, Neithan Casano and Didith Rodrigo of ALLS demonstrated seven of ALLS’s learning applications to the DepEd Division of Makati:

Ibigkas!

Ibigkas! Filipino

Ibigkas! Math 1-3

Learning Likha: Music for the Fiesta

Learning Likha: Rangers to the Rescue

Let’s Build a City

Drug Defense

For each of the games, ALLS suggested post-game activities. About 180 teachers attended the one-hour demonstration.  Feedback was positive. The teachers said that the games would be very helpful for vocabulary, journaling, and teaching sustainability. The teachers were particularly delighted that the games were available for free.

ALLS thanks the Division of Makati, the Office of the Vice-President for Social Development, and Michelle De Guzman for making this demonstration possible.

“Outfoxing the Data: Cagy Methods for Determining When to Interview Students About Their Learning” by Dr. Jaclyn Ocumpaugh

One recent advancement in tools for understanding student emotions is the development of a new research tool, an Android App called The Quick Red Fox (QRF). QRF is designed to work with affect detection models that have been embedded within educational software systems, so that researchers can be alerted in real time to important changes in students behavior and emotions. This advancement can assist researchers in empirically determining when to interview a student about their affective experiences with the learning software.

This talk will discuss the design and use of QRF to study student learning in Betty’s Brain, a computer-based learning environment (CBLE) designed to support self-regulated learning of science inquiry skills. In particular, it will discuss how we determined when to interview a given student, and the implications of these decisions. It will also discuss preliminary findings related to student interviews, which constitute a unique form of self-report data that can help us to better understand students’ learning experiences.

“Predicting Student Emotions Without Sensors: What Can We Learn?” by Dr. Jaclyn Ocumpaugh

Abstract:

Research on detecting student emotions from their interactions with educational software is now nearly a decade old, and we are beginning to explore how students’ affective experiences relate to their learning. Our results are sometimes surprising. While many of the hypothesized relationships occur, they are often infrequent.

This talk will cover some of the methods used to generate the models we use to detect student affect when sensor data is impractical or altogether impossible (e.g., when analyzing retrospective data). It will then discuss how those models have been used to explore the relationship between student affect and learning in different contexts, including the implications of conflicting findings.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Jaclyn Ocumpaugh is the Associate Director of the Penn Center for Learning Analytics at the University of Pennsylvania and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Learning Analytics and Computer-Based Learning in Context. Her work often combines log file analysis with field observations to better understand how students engage with STEM learning systems, with an emphasis on the contextual factors involved with those processes. With a PhD in Linguistics, where focused on the English language patterns of underrepresented minorities, she has extensive experience in fieldwork. She has used this background in her role as a learning scientist to co-develop the BROMP method for measuring student engagement (which is now being used by over 150 researchers worldwide), to develop software for English Language Learners, and (of relevance to this project) to lead efforts to interview students about their affective experiences in Betty’s Brain. Her works have helped guide the development of two different applications designed to facilitate fieldwork, including Human Affect Recording Tool (HART) which implements the BROMP observations, and the Quick Red Fox (QRF) application, which facilitates qualitative interviews of students based on their interactions with online learning systems. Ocumpaugh has collaborated on — and led — a range of major research projects.

Teacher’s Guide for Remote Learning During School Closures and Beyond

Last April, the TPD@Scale Coalition launched the Teacher’s Guide for Remote Learning During School Closures and Beyond. This quick-decision guide, prepared by FIT-ED (Coalition Secretariat) with Coalition members Education University of Hong Kong, SUMMA and RTI International, is intended for teachers continuing to engage their students in learning during school closures and beyond.

YouTube playlists are also available to serve as supplementary materials for the Teacher’s Guide for Remote Learning. This can help educators know:

  • What: The content to be taught
  • Who: The learning profile, current status and needs
  • How: The learning design and implementation

ALLS would like to share these resources so school administrators, teachers, and parents everywhere can have access to high-quality materials to ensure continuous learning for children.
