Workshops on Integrating Computer Science and the Learning Sciences
The Ateneo Laboratory for the Learning Sciences brings together artificial intelligence, data mining and statistics, education, cognitive psychology, human factors and other disciplines to study, enhance, and develop environments that improve student achievement and the learning experience. In this workshop, we will give participants an overview of laboratory’s goals and directions. We will discuss our work in affect and behavior detection and response in programming environments and intelligent tutors, as well as the design and development of interfaces that are sensitive to biometric readings and use behaviors. The purpose of this workshop is to acquaint fellow faculty members and current or prospective graduate students with our ongoing research, and in so doing to foster collaboration and encourage participation.
Workshop schedules and locations are as follows:
January 14, 8:00 to 12:00 Ateneo de Manila University
January 21, 8:00 to 5:00 Ateneo de Davao University
February 11, 8:00 to 5:00 Ateneo de Naga University

ALLS Paper Accepted in IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing
The full paper entitled “The Effects of an Interactive Software Agent on Student Affective Dynamics while Using an Intelligent Tutoring System” co-authored by Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo, Ryan S. Baker, Jenilyn Agapito, Julieta Nabos, Ma. Concepcion Repalam, Salvador S. Reyes, Jr., and Ma. Ofelia Clarissa Z. San Pedro was just accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing journal.
The journal is a cross-disciplinary, international publication meant to “disseminate results of research on the design of systems that can recognize, interpret, and simulate human emotions and related affective phenomena.” The article studies the affective states exhibited by students using an intelligent tutoring system for scatterplot generation and interpretation, with and without an agent. Boredom, confusion and engaged concentration persisted in both conditions.

ALLS presents at the National Conference for IT Educators in Puerto Princesa, Palawan
Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo, Thor Collin Andallaza and Jonathan Jason King Li joined representatives from De La Salle University at a workshop on Affective and Empathic Computing held at Palawan State University, Puerto Princesa, Palawan on October 27. Dr. Rodrigo gave an overview of affective computing. Mr. Andallaza discussed his work with Rina Joy Jimenez on the development of an affect-sensitive agent for Aplusix. Finally, Mr. King Li demonstrated his work with Tricia Monsod on the development of an affect sensitive game.
